Ahoy landlubbers!

We are finally going west!

For me the day started with being woken up 20 min before 6 by a very enthusiastic deckhand Matthias who had just reached a speed of 9 knots with a lot of rain after an otherwise quiet watch. For me, this was not the best news, since I’ve recently discovered that my sailing gear is no longer waterproof. Nonetheless, I had to get out of bed and start my watch. Luckily I could borrow his raingear, and all was well after a nice toastie. My function on board is bosun, so my job is to plan the day for the deckhands and make sure everyone has something to do while on deck. Since the day started with a lot of rain and rolling that sent (plastic) plates flying, I ruled out quite some jobs in the rigging. So I put up a few extra safetylines and washboards for the doors and planned for a small inventory check inside. When we reached the afternoon the sun was shining, we changed the course to west and set the topsail! This also made the ship more stable, so we could get a few more jobbies done! Today was also big testing day with corona quicktests and luckily everyone tested negative, so we are officially headed for the Caribean!

In the night watch we went through how to tack and jibe, which Captain Tsjerk taught a lesson on earlier today. The trainees are doing great and are very interested with a lot of question – so that is really cool and makes our jobs a lot more fun!

All in all a pretty good and eventful day!
