When we look up, we see a sky filled with stars. Some bigger than others. Some brighter than others. And thanks to that, they’re all unique, despite that they sometimes look the same.
After the sun touches the ocean, we prepare the Swan for the night. The last stuff that doesn’t belong on deck disappears inside and light switches on so that we’re visible for others out at sea. As we sail through the night, the Swan becomes quiet. After two a.m. the trainee watches stop and the nautical crew is all by themselves. It creates a moment where inspiration comes and fears go. Like last night, the deckhands discussed how to steer the perfect course, our first mate wrote songs and together we talked about the day and our experiences. Apart from that, we still keep the Swan sailing as fast as possible.
Being on a ship like this makes you feel very tiny on the ocean. How is it even possible that we’re able to cross it? Due to all the different weather systems, waves, food preparations and not to forget, people on the boat itself. That’s why we always work together, as a team. No matter what. We talk over every decision we make, drill we practise and sails we set. We all give our best effort to make it a fantastic trip.
At the moment, our team is filled with stars. Some are better at navigating or cooking. Some are better in maintaining and sailing the ship. And thanks to that, we’re all unique, despite that we sometimes look the same.
Teamwork is everywhere important. Not only out here at sea. But right now, that’s where our focus is. We’ll keep on sailing and try to make it a fantastic trip!
Fair winds,
Jeske (Deckhand)
